The Asia Internet Coalition (AIC) has submitted comments to the Personal Data Protection Commission (PDPC) and the Ministry of Communications and Information (MCI) on the Personal Data Protection (Amendment) Bill 2020, (“the Bill”).  We commend the PDPC’s and MCI’s efforts on steering three public consultations on the policy positions for the key proposed amendments to the Personal Data Protection Act and for releasing the amended bill, to ensure that this policy initiative strikes a balance between the need to protect individuals’ personal data. Singapore’s digital landscape and economy have evolved and capitalisation of data and cross-border data flows have become increasingly important for business innovation and economic competitiveness, which AIC strongly supports. In view of technological developments, we are also cognizant of the significant challenges, owing to which data protection laws are also shifting towards a risk-based, accountability approach to ensure organizations meet data protection standards.
