The Asia Internet Coalition (AIC) has submitted comments to the Legislative Council Panel on Constitutional Affairs on the Review of the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance (PDPO). First and foremost, we commend the Hong Kong Government for proposing reforms to the PDPO. It’s becoming an everyday occurrence to see news articles on personal data protection due to an increased global conversation on privacy legislation. As technological advancements continue to evolve and become more sophisticated so do the choices individuals face when it comes to managing their data privacy. Therefore, it is critical to protect individual data particularly when economies and companies become more digital in nature. Given this, we understand the government’s motivation and believe that this is a timely initiative to introduce reforms to the PDPO.
